The 30-second answer
ITAR, the International Traffic in Arms Regulations, is the US regime controlling defense articles. Its reach does not stop at American companies: if a US-controlled component sits inside your product, US rules can follow that product into every market you sell. An ITAR-free component removes that hook. Your export approvals then come from your supplier’s own government, in OSCP’s case Canada, not from Washington.

The re-export trap most buyers meet too late
The pattern is common: a European, Israeli, Korean or Japanese integrator builds a system, wins a customer in a third country, and then discovers a single US-origin part inside gives the US government a say over the sale. Approval can take many months, arrive with conditions, or not arrive at all. The program schedule now belongs to someone else’s foreign policy.
Inertial sensors are a classic case. High-performance IMUs and gyros are precisely the kind of part that carries US control, which is why “ITAR-free IMU” is a search phrase in the first place.
What ITAR-free requires
- No US-controlled content in the bill of materials. Not just final assembly outside the US; the parts inside matter.
- Non-US design authority and jurisdiction. The product must be designed and controlled under another country’s law.

What ITAR-free does not mean
- Not “export-control-free.” Dual-use sensors still need permits, Canadian ones in our case. Timelines vary by destination and end user, so ask us for an estimate against your program. Any supplier who claims no permits are ever needed is a red flag.
- Not a performance statement. ITAR-free says where the rules come from, not how good the sensor is. Evaluate the datasheet separately.
- Not always permanent. A supplier who later swaps in a US part changes your position. Ask how the bill of materials is controlled over time.
Why it matters more in 2026
European rearmament programs increasingly carry local-content requirements: under the Canada-EU security framework, systems can require 80% non-US content to qualify for certain funding. Meanwhile Israeli, Korean and Japanese primes sell worldwide and cannot afford a US veto embedded in their supply chain. An ITAR-free inertial sensor keeps every one of those doors open.
